Owijok

The owijok is a local variant of the oberek, and it is the most popular dance in the region of Sieradz. The name of the dance is a reference to the whirling of the dancing pairs as “owijać” means to wrap in Polish.
The dance was performed on almost all occasions: weddings, folk gatherings and feasts. It was performed by any number of pairs whirling in a circle. Usually, the dance began with one couple, who would stand facing the band and sing a capella: “Muzykanty, zagrejta mi owijoka!” (Musicians, play the owijok for us). When the musicians obliged, gradually, other pairs would joined in the dance, whirling smoothly, without jumps.
